3 Tips to rock your next event

Using social media to promote an event is important before, during and after the party . In Chapter 7 of Guy Kawasaki''s ""The Art of Social Media," he gives many tips on how to implement social media into your next event.

The first tip I found beneficial was to use a short hashtag. A lot of times people try to overcomplicate hashtags, mainly because they don't really know how to use them. Hashtags are quick taglines that visitors and coordinators use to promote the event. It is short, fun and memorable. Get to the point. The example I can think of was when I attended PRSSA National Conference in Boston last October. The hashtag was #PRSSANC17. It was short and easy for not only the staff, but also the event goers. Once you have created that hashtag, use it all the time. On all your channels, posts, tweets; Use that hashtag. Having a hashtag will give viewers the ability to view all other posts and pictures that also used that hashtag creating a place shared pictures for everyone to see.

Next was to have a good place to take photos. This was my favorite tip because this is my essential part of planning an event. I love having a good backdrop or photo booth. You want people to take photos so they show all of their followers what a good time they are having. If they take a picture in front of a wall or in a hallway, you are missing out on an opportunity to promote your event. Whether it is very simple or asethically pleasing, having a photo area is little effort that goes a long way.

This last tip caught me off guard but makes all the more sense now. Dedicate one person solely to run social media activities. This person will be busy before, during and after the event. By having someone focus on tweeting that means you can handle other important situations. You can handle whatever crisis is thrown your way during the event or communicate with the people that are in attendance. Social media is crucial to having a successful event, so put the most capable person in charge and let them tweet away.

Socializing at an event has become so much more important than it used to be. There are new tips and tricks every day. Be sure to throw the best event so people cannot stop raving about it on their personal accounts.
